Viminacium
I visited Viminacium in 2008 several years after it had been discovered. The areas that had been excavated here the North Gate, Public Baths, the Latrines and the Necropolis. The Mausoleum is notable in that it is believed Roman Emperor Hostilian died of plague and is buried there. There has been further excavations since my visit that has turned up some significant finds. I would recommend a visit.
Viminacium was built early in the 1st century CE as a key base for the Roman expansion into Germania. At it peak the city and military camp is believed to hold around 40,000 Romans. It was completely destroyed by the Salvs in the 6th century.
