Stirling
The major historic district starts at Stirling Castle which rivals Edinburgh for the ancient Royal Seat of Scotland. There are a lot of similarities between both Castles geographically. Both are built on volcanic cones the sides of which were scoured by glaciers to leave a teardrop shaped hill. The Castle is well worth a visit and the audio tour is very good, but do not be afraid to ask the re-enactors in the various rooms questions. They have restored the exterior of the Great Hall to the peach color of the 16th century as well as the interiors of many of the buildings including the Great Hall, Royal apartments and the chapel. Down the hill the Argyll Lodge is included in the entrance fee and has a wonderful guided tour, don’t miss it. Also there is the Church of the Holy Rude, Wallace Monument, and the site for the Battle of Brannockburn. To the west are the picturesque ruins of Balquhidder Church with Rob Roy’s Grave.
