Zeeland
Zeeland is a province situated on the North Sea in the southern part of the Netherlands and is essentially a large river delta situated at the mouth of the Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt rivers. It is very scenic with lots of bays and coves. We took a boat tour of the bays and visited the towns of Middleburg, Veere and the Delta Works in 2009.
During World War II about a third of Middelburg was bombed by the German Luftwaffe. After the War, the destroyed part of the old town center was rebuilt and restored along pre-War lines and the city has regained much of its historic and picturesque character.
Veere is village that has a Town Hall with the beautiful façade which dates from the fifteenth century and a Church is huge compared to the current population of the town which was built in 1348.
The Delta Works is a series of construction projects in southwest Netherlands built to protect large area of land in the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta from the sea surges during storms. The works consist of a series of dams, sluices, locks, dikes, levees, and storm surge barriers. We visited the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barriers during our visit.
