South Holland
South Holland is a province situated on the North Sea in the western part of the Netherlands. We visited the Keukenhof flower gardens, the Kinderdijk windmills, and the town of Schoonhoven in 2009.
Keukenhof gardens is the world's largest flower garden and should be on your “must see” list. If you have allergies remember to take your pill (I had to take 2) but the beauty and variety of flowers makes it worth it.
Schoonhoven is one of the smallest towns in the Netherlands and is very scenic with its city walls, canals, and the medieval water gate (Veerpoort) next to the Lek River.
The 19 windmills at Kinderdijk were constructed around 1740 as part of a larger water management system to prevent flooding of farm land. They pumped the excess water from the fields (which are below sea-level) into the Lek River. Larger powered screw pumps now keep the water level constant.
