Tarxien Temple Complex
We visited the Tarxien Temple Complex in 2004. The Tarxien Temple Complex consist of three separate temple structures that are combined into one complex. The first temple has been dated to approximately 3100 BCE and is the most elaborately decorated of all the temples in Malta with depictions of domestic animals, spiral designs or other patterns carved on wall reliefs, altars, and screens. The middle temple was built about 3000 BCE and has three pairs of apses instead of the two apses dominate in the rest of the Maltese temples. The east temple was built around 3100 BCE. The temple excavations reveal that it was used extensively for rituals and animal sacrifice. There are stone rollers left outside the South temple which provides an idea into how the megaliths were constructed.
