The Lakes District
We visited the Lakes District (Lake Como, Lake Garda, and Lake Iseo) in 2005 and used Erbusco as our center point for exploring the Lakes District.
Iseo is at the most southern point of Lake Iseo. It was fun to wander through the scenic village. The Parish Church of St Andrew (Pieve di S. Andrea) is the primary attraction and dates back to the 12th Century. It has a distinct Romanesque façade and bell tower. The interior is very nice with side chapels, a lovely marble altar, and number of fine paintings from of various centuries on display.
Lake Garda is one of the major tourist destinations in the Lakes Region. We visited the village of Malcesine on the north east side of the lake. Its most prominent landmark is the Castello Scaligero, which has 13th-century fortifications surrounding an older medieval tower. Remnants of an Etruscan tomb have been found within the castle walls.
We drove along the western coast of Lake Como on our way to the Alps and stopped in the town of Menaggio. This is the main town on the Western Shore and it is attractive but not as touristy as some of the other towns on the lake. It has a nice pedestrian walkway with coffee shops, gelaterias and restaurants. The scenery along the lake was gorgeous.
