Borghese Gallery
The Borghese Gallery houses the remaining Borghese collection of paintings, sculpture and antiquities, begun by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the nephew of Pope Paul V (reign 1605–1621). In 1808 Prince Camillo Borghese, Napoleon's brother-in-law, was forced to sell about 1/3 of the original Borghese sculptures and antiquities to Emperor Napoleon, they now reside in the Louvre. The Villa was built by the architect Flaminio Ponzio from sketches drawn by Scipione Borghese who used it as a party villa at the edge of Rome.
Cardinal Borghese was an early patron of Bernini and an avid collector of works by Caravaggio, who are well represented in the collection.
