Sights of Iceland
We visited Iceland in the summer of 2012. There is a lot of interesting scenery outside of Reykjavík. There is the Vikingaheimar Museum where there is a recreation of a Viking ship, there is horseback riding through the lava fields on Icelandic Pony’s and of course the geothermal sites like Krysuvik Seltun near Lake Kleifarvatn.
The most famous geothermal site is the Blue Lagoon spa. This “spa” has the distinction of being the largest ecological disaster of Iceland. The waste water from the nearby geothermal plant was planned to drain through the lava, but particles clogged the percolation paths and caused an ever growing lake. The water was found to have therapeutic properties and the Blue Lagoon spa was born (a great example of a silver lining in a cloud). It is certainly worth a visit (and a soak).
