Santorini
I visited Santorini in 2004. Santorini is essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic explosion that in 1450 BCE that destroyed the island and created the current caldera. The resulting tsunami swamped Crete and significantly accelerated the decline of the Minoan cultivation. Now a beautiful white city of Fira overlooks the caldera. Fira is primarily a walking town and is quite fun to stroll around in. There is also a small wine industry which “trains” their grapes to grow in what look like low baskets in a depression. This keeps the grapes on the inside to protect them from winds and help them collect water.
