Island of Corsica
I visited the island of Corsica in 2004. It is off the coast of Italy and Napoleon Bonaparte was born in its capital, Ajaccio in 1769, the year it came under French control. So there are a lot of statues and sites (like the Imperial Chapel) that commemorate Napoleon. The promenades and plazas are great for strolling with charming shops and cafes for a coffee or a bite to eat. The Historic Library which is worth a peak, just to browse and see the very old books on its shelves.
We took a drive up into the mountains to see the countryside and visit the charming town of Ocana. It is a quaint little town where I had a chestnut beer; which had an interesting but pleasant taste. Apparently chestnuts trees grow very well in Corsica and are used for many things like flour, beer, roasted nuts, etc. We were told that when various forces (Greek, Roman, Italian, etc) would attack the island, the populace would flee into the mountains and live off chestnuts while they fought the invading forces.
