Yangzi River
We cruised from Chongqing to Wuhan on the Yangtze River in 2001, before the completion of the Three Gorges Dam Project. Many of the sites we visited are now under 175 meters of water, but we were struck by the massive construction along the river as dikes and new cities were built to accommodate the coming flood.
The Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world. It flows for 6,418 kilometers (3,988 mi) from the glaciers in Tibet and across China before emptying into the East China Sea at Shanghai. The Yangtze River (along with the Yellow River) is the most important river in the history, culture and economy of China. For thousands of years, people have used the river for water, irrigation, sanitation, transportation, industry, boundary-marking and war. The water has a deep brown (muddy) color due to the large about of silt washed down from the Tibetan plateaus.
