Xian
We visited Xi'an in 2001. With more than 3,100 years of history it is one of the oldest cities in China and is also the eastern terminus of the Silk Road. It was capitol of China under its first emperor (Qin Shi Huang) at the beginning of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE). Qin Shi Huang is the emperor who ordered the construction of the Terracotta Warriors to protect his mausoleum. The Terracotta Warriors are the main tourist stop in Xi'an; look for the horses and the general when you visit the site.
Other spots to visit are the Big Goose Pagoda and Little Goose Pagoda with its “magic bell”, as well as the city wall (and its moat) which still survives and is in excellent shape. It is a great spot to walk up and look over the city. Small markets and street vendors set up next to the wall in the morning so it is a good spot to get a bite to eat.
The Shaanxi Historical Museum houses over 300,000 items, including murals, paintings, pottery, as well as bronze, gold, and silver objects dating back over 3000 years. The 6th century BC Zhou Dynasty bronze bells are one of the star attractions of the museum. There is a replica set that they use for musical performances, so I would recommend setting aside time to attend.
