Daning River
We cruised down the Daning River in 2001 as part of our Yangtze River cruise. Upon completion of the Three Gorges Dam a portion of the Daning River will be submerged. The pictures in this gallery are before the completion of the Three Gorges Dam project.
The Daning River flows down the "lesser three gorges" near Wushan and was a beautiful scenic cruise on small motor boats through the steep cliffs of the gorge. The merging of both rivers shows a clear line at the Daning River mouth demarking the clear water of the Daning River in stark contrast to the muddy Yangtze River. The remains of an ancient plank road can be seen along the side of the cliff above the water line, it was built to allow ship traffic to be pulled upstream. There is also the “Hanging Coffins” which contain the skeletons of the ancient Ba minority group. These coffins were placed into small caves along the cliff face. Most are probably submerged now as the dam is complete.
