Tulum - 1998
We visited Tulum in 1998. The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in Mexico. It is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites and is a popular tourists site.
Tulum was a Maya walled city which served as a major port for the Maya Empire. Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Maya between the 13th and 15th centuries.
The Maya civilization had the only known fully developed written language of the Americas. Its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems were also advanced. The Maya civilization started around 2000 BCE and many Maya cities reached their peak between 250 CE and 900 CE, but slowly declined until the arrival of the Spanish. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish were the major cause of Mayan's Empire's demise as well as most of the native American populations.
I have included a site map (and labels on some of the picture) from the 1924 Book; "Tulum - An Archaeological Study of the West Coast of Yucatan" by S.K Lothrop; which is a detailed archaeological study of the ruins.
