Aswan - Abu Simbel - Temple of Ramses II
Abu Simbel is the new home of the temples of Ramses II and his Queen Nefertari. The preservation of these Egyptian temples was one of the most enormous UNESCO projects. These two temples were cut out of rock and moved to higher ground when the Aswan Dam flooded the original site. Other temples were moved as well (one is now in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art), but the colossal task of cutting these two temples from the rock face as the flood waters rose and reassembling them on higher ground was truly groundbreaking.
