Palermo is the capital of the Italian island of Sicily. In the center is the Royal Palace (Palazzo dei Normanni) started in the 9th century, and the Palatine Chapel (Cappella Palatina) with some of the best Byzantine mosaics ever done by Islamic craftsmen. Something you do not want to miss.
Elsewhere in town there is the 12th-century Palermo Cathedral which houses royal tombs and a very interesting sun dial. Busy markets are in different areas of the city and are well worth a visit. We saw a wedding procession at one by the old city gate. There are a lot of other sites you would want to visit as well, like the Quattro Canti (Medieval 6 corner street junction, Saint Cataldo Church in Martorana, Santa Maria Nuova Cathedral in Monreale, and others.
